I went to my first Summer Series event yesterday at Telegraph Woods and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the course. I'm now planning to forego a few of my Saturday morning golf matches (I can always play in the afternoon) to take part in a some more of these events. The great thing is that they are local - I cycled to this one, and cheap - £3 for just under an hour's entertainment can't be bad. Well done SOC for putting these events on! The next one is at Itchen Valley Country Park on 5th June and I'll be cycling to that one too.
SOC Summer Series, Fleming Park
This was an excellent little event run on a brand new area for Orienteering. As with all the summer series so far we had a good turn out of over fifty participants including several new faces and some regular orienteers.
Bill made very good use of the map that he helped Roger Pleasant to create. The area is very fast encouraging competitors to go flat out. However there is enough complexity to catch people out if they do not stay in contact with the map.
I am suprised that more club orienteers have not discovered what these small local events can offer! The series has certainly introduced new people to orienteering and many participants are returning to have another go. So why not come to the next event at Shawford Down on the 3rd July and have some fun!
SOC Summer Series
Thanks for your comments Steve - it just shows that even small areas can provide challenging orienteering for the experienced club orienteers - that's why we put on the green course! Hopefully more will follow your example and come to Itchen Valley. Following that in the series we have another new area - Fleming Park at Eastleigh.
